How to Celebrate Women's History Month
Happy Women's History Month! At Papillon, we think that women should be celebrated nationally every day, but we'll take a month (for now). To celebrate this month, we are highlighting three of our favorite female fashion icons who made history not only through their actions, but through how they chose to express themselves in their clothing. While we highlight their accomplishments, check out how you can also recreate some of their iconic looks with the links below!
1. Audrey Hepburn - Simple Elegance
If you happened to see our Barbie display anytime from October to December, you might recognize this actress! Audrey Hepburn was a a Belgian-born, British actress who is most well known for her roles in iconic films such as Roman Holiday, Sabrina, and Breakfast at Tiffany's (the movie our Barbie display was inspired by). While she was a brilliant actress as an adult, she was an incredibly brave young girl- according to a New York Times article, Hepburn even helped deliver letters to the resistance in World War II! Later in life, Hepburn became a humanitarian, becoming a UNICEF goodwill ambassador.
When it comes to fashion, Audrey teaches us glamour and elegance is not something that always has to be tied to wearing something that sparkles. It is not something that is tied to the most dramatic outfits (although it definitely can be fun to do so!). It is something that can come from simple silhouettes, a great black dress and some low heels, or a pair of high waisted patterned pants. Elegance comes from how you carry yourself and how you feel in your clothing.

2. Carolina Herrera - Business-Minded Elegance
Carolina Herrera was meant to be in fashion, she actually grew up accustomed to being taken to fashion shows by her grandmother. After working for Emilio Pucci and getting to know the social scene of the 1980s, and being voted into the International Best Dressed List Hall of Fame in 1981, she was encouraged by the then Editor-in-Chief of Vogue to start her own line. Since then, her line has skyrocketed, receiving popular and critical acclaim from all around the world. She has become not only a fashion icon, but a business mogul with a multi-million dollar brand.
When it comes to her own personal fashion, we can often find Carolina Herrera in her classic uniform: a classic button down, and an incredible knee-length skirt. Her fashion uniform is the definition of elegant, business chic. She teaches us that when we are called to make waves in the male-dominated business world, we do not have to give up our femininity in how we express ourselves.
Re-create her classic look by combining one of our wonderful skirts (from Joseph Ribkoff or Frank Lyman), with our classic white button down.
3. Coco Chanel - Innate Elegance
Coco Chanel has a true rags to riches story. She was raised in an orphanage by nuns, and lived a hard life as a young adult in Paris. She eventually started her own hat shop, and went onto expand into clothing, introducing the world to the classic Little Black Dress and Chanel suit. After closing down her shops in the 1930s, Chanel made a comeback in 1950 at the age of 70, and won over the fashion world once again, reestablishing a brand that still lives on today as a pillar of fashion.
Chanel teaches us a lot about fashion and elegance through her life. Elegance does not come from social standing, or from benefits from our past. True elegance comes from how we handle the difficult situations life presents us with. Her innate elegance and taste are what make her a woman that we admire.
